We're experiencing spot shortages of 89 and 93 octane gas around here. Q45's (all of them) are supposed to compensate for lower octane gas. When I had to use a tank of 87, the car seemed to run fine although with noticeably less power. After a quarter tank, it would display check engine following about 50 miles of freeway driving, then the exhaust would emit the sulfur odor if unburned fuel. I had these identical symptoms in my other 94 (with twice the mileage) when the MAF connector went bad. this time, when I was able to find premium, the problems cleared up after a quarter tank. Has anyone else had problems using regular gas? I'm not sure how reliable the gas supply is going to be around here until we return to the winter formulation.

Ouch.

Maybe you can find some octane boost at a local auto parts store to add to every tankfull till you can get at least 91 octane again.

we had a no premium gas several weeks ago and so I filled up with 87 as that was all they had. Car ran like $hit afterwards....but then again I have the timing bumped up 2 degrees and JWT Chip. I have never put anything less than 93 in the 6+ years of ownership I don't know if it would react the same (running like crap) if my car was stock. Get ya some octane booster.

Same thing here. I ran 2 tanks of 89, and Layla couldn't pass a Camry. I got a CEL, and the car acted like the MAF was unplugged. Of course, I have been having MAF issues. I got my first tank of 93 in her yesterday. I also cleared the codes in the ECU, so I hope she starts to feel better.

I think I will keep a couple cans of octane boost in the trunk for those times I can't get premium.

My first tank of 93 cleared up my problems by the time the first quarter tank was consumed. Hope you have the same luck. I also wonder with the way storage tanks are emptying around here (Atlanta), if a lot of debris and water that normlly doesn't escape is causing occasional bad gas.

I have an 1994 Q45, and always used 87 octane and it seems to run fine. Average about 18.5 mpg a mix if city and hwy. Lately I have had what I was told were MAF sensor problems. I took it out and sprayed it with electronics parts cleaner as suggested. It got better, but again I have missing going up a hill and at idle, the engine often dies. I just looked up the price to buy one and it was $366 - ouch. The car has 80k mioles and the original plugs. I am hoping my issues could be something else. How long do plugs last? What should someone do to clean the fuel Injectors?

Thank You

I suggest you start a new thread in the infiniti online mechanic, located here... zeroforum?id=24 Give us some details, but first stop putting 93 in..... Its like giving it a bud light when it really wants a scotch on the rocks.....

There was a technical service bulletin awhile back that discussed poor grounding of the MAF circuit and recommended insalling an additional ground wire. One of my 94's had it (150,000 miles), the other (80,000) does not. The one with the ground had more problems. I spent a great deal of time trying to figure out a sure cure, and am pretty well convinced replacing the MAF isn't it. The actual harness side connector seemed to be the culprit in my case. Whenever the car stalled or sputtered, I could cure it by jiggling the connector until the idle smoothed out.

Both mine have the ground wire. One is very well done, the other looks like crap. Both were done at dealerships. It just shows you the difference in wormanship even at the dealer.

I will never put 87 back in the car, after experiencing the poor performance.

The MAF plug is the culprit on Layla. I bet I have spent more than the $20 for a new plug in poor gas mileage. I am getting up a list of parts I need from Joe right now:

MAF plugRear passenger window regulatorblack plastic headlight cover plastic screw thingysHood rubber bumper supportsdriving light plastic pieces next to lightsO2 sensorstransmission gasket & filter

Just a little winter maintenance.

There have been a couple of 94 Q's being parted out on ebay within the past week, one with 113K miles. I bought a couple of things for mine that were in real good shape. If you don't mind used, you might look there for the window regulators. I bought a $400 part for $39, plus a spare MAF to play with for $70.
