I have a buddy of mine that is going to be buying a 94 Q that has a bad motor(motor has locked up). He was asking me if the transmission in that car is still the earlier version, the one with the lower 1st,2nd gears. I told him that I wasn't sure because I always went along with the fact that they changed the gearing in 94. The only problem is that this model was built in 4/93. I didn't think that they started the new model year until around August. The engine is locked up so we can't test drive it to see what the gearing is. He has another engine to put in it, so that want be a problem. It would be nice though if it is the earlier style transmission. He is getting the car for $500 and it will come with all of the reciepts from Infiniti. It has a burgundy exterior with the usual tan interior that is practically flawless with the chrome piepans and fairly new tires. I told him that he can't beat that. It belonged to an elderly lady who apparantly was the original owner. The guy that is selling the car was wanting to by the engine from my buddy but he told him that he wanted to get another Q. Anyways. Just wanting to find out if there is a way to tell. Maybe a tag on the transmission or something.

Nope you have the later transmission with taller 1-2 gears sorry, But you could maybe look at the TCU part number chart and see which one you have.

But are you keeping the 1994 Q45 or parting it out?

Leaky injector that caused the engine to hydrolock?

My 94Q has a build date of 2/93 so yours is at least a couple of months into the run. I wonder if the time to ship (on a ship) and transport across the USA pushes the start time forward about 6 months for Japanese imports? The link may be helpful to you.

I mentioned in my post that he is buying the 94 to put his engine in it because he wants to get another Q and for $500 you can't go wrong. The guy said that the engine had a ticking sound up front and sounded like it had a bad timing chain tensioner. The car was running when he first posted the ad. He went to start it the other day and it locked up on him.

Could be an injector or maybe some how a chain guide.

It turns out that a connecting rod had come loose from the crank. I took all of the plugs out and tried to manually turn the engine over both directions which it didn't budge. So, I ended up grabbing a ratchet extension to push on the pistons to see if any moved and sure enough, the piston on the passenger side front practically pushed down into the oil pan. The car has 105,913 miles on the odometer.
