I have a '94 Pathfinder SE 4WD. The "check engine" light is on, and the code is #14 (speed sensor).

Speedometer, odometer, and trip recorder are not functioning properly. Most times the speedometer needle fluctuates or freezes between 0 and 30 MPH. The odometer and LCD trip recorder either don't move at all, or will suddenly skip ahead to a different mileage reading all at once. Multimeter test of the speed sensor appears to be good, so I'm assuming the problem is in the instrument cluster.

This is what my panel looks like:

I have a service manual that explains how to get at the cluster, but step 1 is to remove the steering wheel! I've seen a tutorial which shows pix of how to get at the cluster on a 2004 model, and it appears much simpler, as it only involves removal of several screws. But before I start taking things apart, I need to make sure that this procedure also applies to the 1994.

Any tips on how to replace, and or further diagnose the problem would be appreciated.

I guess you're right in the fact that you need to remove the steering wheel, as page BF-27 of your FSM says to. From the exploded parts diagram, it would appear that there is one screw behind the steering wheel that you need to remove in order to access the instrument cluster. That's unfortunate.

You can find diagnosis procedures for the instrument cluster in the FSM as well, starting on page EL-40.

Thanks. I was able to remove the cluster without removing the wheel (just the steering wheel cowling, and a lower panel.)
