Hey guys, I just received an e-mail from one of our Spanish members from Panama City.He owns a USDM '94 Maxima SE. Apparently when he travels over a hole or any bump, the engine dies and refuses to come to life. On other occasions, it will almost die and then only rev up to 1500RPM. Also sometimes when he shifts to R and D the engine will die. Once started again, it will shut off randomly on its own.The Nissan mechanics are baffled and he suspects are just clueless on what to do.Any ideas that I can throw at him to try and help him out would be greatly appreciated.Seyath.

I would say it's a bod ground or slight break in the engine harness. Have him start the car, then open the hood and wiggle each harness. If he wiggles one and the car dies, he's found his starting spot. He would then need to visually inspect the harness for bad spots, and do voltage/ohm checks to find the bad wire.

it does sound electrical and checking all of the connections is a good idea.

I wonder if the Nissan mechanics had checked codes or if the USDM VE30DE is not familiar to them? You might ask him if they pulled the codes and if so, which ones came up.

My first guess would be one of the sensors is bad. Mass Air Flow (MAF), Throttle Position Sensor, Cam Position Sensor or possibly even the Coolant Temp Sensor.

Some people have problems with a car dying on acceleration and that is usually the coil packs. Even one bad one can cause stalling. However, it will usually start and idle fine. I had this problem before and put in new coil packs.

My coolant temp sensor also went out and it the car would run horribly and sometimes died. That one gave me a code, but the coil packs didn't.

MAF problems are fairly common. Most US owners just grab a spare from a junkyard car. However, when the MAF conks out, it usually runs OK, but goes into limp mode where the car won't exceed a certain rpm. I think it is 2k.
