1994 Maxima auto transmission problem

I have a 1994 Maxima with automatic transmission and everything runs fine except it won't go past 2nd gear....is this a common problem and is there a fix for it? In other words, what should I be looking at to fix it other than a new transmission...your help is much appreciated

It may be low on ATF.

Thx Rogoman for the suggestion but having checked the level the normal way it seems to be ok and the oil doesn't appear to be burned...
