1994 J30t125K mi

When I leave the parking place slowly(reverse or drive gear), the car will suddenly shutdown several times. But when I drive out, everything seems all right.

I have low coolant level now and try to add some. Is it possible to relate with the sudden shutdown issue?

Thanks a lot.

You should really let the J warm up for 7-10 minutes before driving off, especially if it is the first drive off the day. The majority of J owners in this board do that because of the age of the car. The J drives and behaves better when all its fluids are warm. You could be having one of the following issues which come with the age of the vehicle (a.) base idle issue, (b.)MAF sensor, (c.) transmission sensor issue. I would take it to an Infiniti dealer for a consult.

Thanks a lot for your suggestion.

After adding the coolant, the idle speed will grow to ~1K for the first time to start. After driving for a while, the idle speed will drop back to ~600 again. But so far no shutdown is found again. :P

I am not sure if it is related with the coolant but I will warm up the car first in the future.

Check for a coolant leak at the reservoir bottle, the hose and the rad itself. You'll need to crawl around with a flashlight. Use your nose also, coolant has a strong smell. If you don't detect any, have someone press the acclerator and see if you have a coolant smell coming out of your exhaust. If you do take the J to a dealer or a mechanic, you need to know what's causing it and have it repaired immediatly, otherwise you'll kill your engine.

It kind of sounds like the vehicle never had its coolant changed or if it did had it mixed wrong which is a bad recipe, especially with the J, since the engine generally runs hot.

"especially with the J, since the engine generally runs hot." ?????

All 90-00 Infiniti use the same thermostat specification just opens at 174F fully wide open at 194F.....stablized at 183-184F..........that is far from what would be called HOT............just average to a little on the coolish side compared to US made big 3 models.

The Cadillac Northstar, relatively speaking, is a motor that tends to run hot, so say the techs at caddyinfo and cadillacforums.

Addressing Q45tech:

"Running hot" referring on the J30 is a term used by virtually every Nissan tech that I have run into during my 9 years of ownership of the J.

And yes I would consider the J runs hotter (maybe all Nissan/Infiniti's do?) than the vast majority of the Porsche, Audi, VW, Honda, Chrysler, Ford, Oldsmobile (I disagree that the American big 3 run hot-at least not in my experience)and my current Acura and Jeep that I've owned in my lifetime. The temperature gauge is always on the colder side of hot (halfway mark of the gauge or below)as opposed to the J (which is above the halfway mark), which I'm told by Infiniti techs that this is normal.

The temperature gauge on my J30 stays just slightly above the 1/3 mark (cooler side of the halfway mark.) I did replace the radiator about 8 months ago, if that made a difference.

When I parked overnight, there is no leak on the ground. But when I came back after about ~30 min driving, I can hear the voice of the water drip hitting on a certain board. The position is near to the rear and in the middle of the car.

I am using the green coolant which is the same color as the original one.
