1994 j30t shifting question?

So I got my 94 j30t a week ago, and it came without owners manual. Could someone explain to me what the 1,2, and 3 on the shift do? Am i correct in assuming it is similar to the audi tiptronic? If so, what is a good practice for operating it? Sorry if this is a common question, but I am new driver. Thanks!

The J has a gated shifter. The transmission can be manually controlled to a degree.

so that means at 3 it wont shift into 4th?

It's an auto transmission like any other car. 1,2 & 3 are in many other cars.

Right, at 3 it will not shift into 4th. Whatever gear you select is the highest gear you'll up-shift to. That doesn't give you quite the control of a manual transmission, but it's good for downshifting
