This happened: First key start ended quickly with odd sound like the starter was not engaging flywheel. Shortly thereafter a burning rubber smell eminated from under the hood. Two more attempts to hear it just spinning, like there was no compression. With help, I observed the fan spinning (thus the crankshaft) so I deduced it wasn't starter.Seemingly, no compression. No clunking sounds (like a broken timing chain.)Battery strong. Engine turns effortlessly. It's like there are no plugs in the threaded openings.Dont' know at this point if it's firing or not.

History:152,000 miles.I'm the second owner, and the first owner fastidiously maintained it at Infinity dealer ( I have all the records.)I switched it to AMSOIL synthetic oil at 102,000 miles.AC system rebuilt, alternator replaced, and battery replaced three weeks prior to this current problem. I've never tuned it up and the plugs have never been changed.

Other than that it ran perfectly for 50,000 miles, except for standard stuff like brakes, tires, etc.

Any thoughts?

Wow, that is tough. Burning rubber sounds like a fan belt. Not starting sounds like an electrical problem.

Try asking this in the Infiniti Online Mechanic forum.

I also posted this on mechanic forum. I'm not doing any work until I have more info, and at this point, I need to develop a troubleshooting protocol.

Any suggestions for setting up such a protocol?
