Hello everyone,

I have a 1994 300zx and I have a battery tray rust issue, it's not that bad but I do want to stop it from getting worse. I'm going to tackle this issue as soon as possible because I love this z. I was wondering how to remove the tray and how would I disconnect the wire that leads to the bottom of the tray. Any suggestions in how to get rid of the rust and disconnect the wire that leads to the bottom of the tray would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

It needs to be cut out.

And you're not alone, every Z I've ever seen has a rusted battery tray. Even my car with 34k has a rusted out tray.

if it's just surface rust and pitting, get as much as you can otu wiht a wire brush then coat it in POR15

Thanks for helping me out, I'm probably going to cut out the battery tray with my dremmel, sand down the tray and any area around the battery that has rusted, after that I'll probably spray paint the rusted areas with rust-o-leums high temperature BBQ grill paint.

Question for car_nut: how do you like the q45 engine inside of your 300zx, was it difficult to accomplish, what mods are needed to make it feasible?

Well, the torque is great but honestly, I'd rather just have a twin turbo. It's only a little bit more expensive and everything fits together perfectly. Plus it's a lot easier to sell a TT then a frankenstein car.

As far as what I had to do, this is what I can remember off the top of my head:

-Modified Z32 crossmember (uses stock Q45 mounts)
-Mazworx VH->VG transmission adapter
-Custom radiator w/electric fan (no room for mechanical fan)
-Re-do wiring harness (not too bad there's some write-ups on it)
-Walbro 255lph fuel pump (TT is better but much more expensive)
-Custom exhaust
-Re-routed P/S lines
-Life without A/C

I used a TT clutch/flywheel combo so I also needed a starter spacer. It's a lot of work and there's barely any aftermarket support for the VH45. Also, the motor and intake (routed beneath the driver side headlight) take up the whole engine bay so if I wanted to turbocharge I would really need a remote mount setup. It's a fun nimble car but a TT has a much greater potential and I'll never be able to sell my car as a whole.
