So I just bought a 1993 TT (in near-perfect condition). After getting it home I started tweaking the position of the drivers' seat, trying to get it to just the right spot... and that's when I discovered the seat will recline, but it won't move back forward. Of course, like an idiot, I kept playing with it to try and free it up, so now the seat is fully reclined and will not go back forward. Fortunately, I have another Z that I was able to swap seats with so I can actually drive the car, but I have a seat that just will not go forward sitting in the garage. I tried disassembling the switch to see if it was a contact problem, but it doesn't appear to be (and was an hour-long ordeal to get it back together).

A couple of questions:

* Can I manually adjust the seat back position? My guess is no.

* There are three motors on the bottom of the seat, and (presumably) one inside the seat itself. Does someone have a diagram of which motor is which (considering there are four axes the seat will move)?

* When I press the seat back switch forward, absolutely nothing happens. I'm thinking the issue might be the relay that actually supplies power to the motor, but I can't find anything regarding where that is and how to get a replacement. The fusebox relay is fine, since all other functions work properly. Does anyone have any leads on this?

Thanks in advance.

I'm Corvidae's roommate, and thought I might reply to this in order to let people see the car in question. It's his second Z, the first being a real beater of a 1990 NA that someone had horribly abused during previous ownership. We did our best to fix it up, but it just got to the point where just the cosmetic repairs would have cost almost as much as another car since we just didn't have the time and skill to do most of the work ourselves. So, he picked up this TT. Hopefully this seat problem can be fixed, but here're a couple pictures of the car.

Hi Corvidae, I went through the same problem recently. If you open the switch you can identify the contacts for the wire pairs that come from the switch to power each motor and jumper some 12V power to the contacts one way, then reverse polarity to verify the motors run and the linkage works. my problem was with the switch. After cleaning the contacts (a pencil eraser works for that) I ended up mixing and matching and even replacing (with home made) one of the plastic spring loaded pieces that toggle the contacts. Heh, heh... yes, it's a bear to get that switch back together and working right...but after a few naughty words I got it.

I messed around with that when I had the switch apart by shorting the terminals. When that wire is shorted to +12V, absolutely nothing happens as far as I can tell, while I hear a relay click and the motor go when I put it back (until the seat went all the way back and it cut off to keep from burning out). This leads me to believe it's either the motor (unlikely) or the power relay, I just can't find it.
