Guys, I'd really appreciate any help or advice anyone can give to me for this problem.

Between 60 mph and 80 mph, my 240sx's steering wheel will vibrate, making the vehicle difficult to control at the highway cruising speed.

The guys at great bear (usually the people that give me a straight story) say it's the tension rod and ball joint; Tension Rod being the main problem vibration wise...

But I've been given 20 some solutions for the same problem, all different. I was wondering if any other 240 owners have encountered this vibration problem and is it something simple or if it's what they are saying...

My father had neglected this vehicle before giving it to me and now I'm because I can't figure out what's going on with this car... but I love the thing and plan to keep it... it roxx... it's my avatar.

I dont know if you tried this already but heres a solution that and could be the problem, check and see if the wheels are balanced, or see if your rim is bent even because that will cause a vibration.

just buy new tension rods and lbj`s. there easy enuff to change tension rods and the lbj`s are a little different but you should be able to do them.

ya my friends cars got the same thing, (its the ball joints) a violent shaking that starts up around freeway speeds, but may go away if you speed up. the strange thing is that it happens kinda suddenly. not like a bent rim or unbalanced wheels which will start to vibrate little by little as you accelerate to higher speeds. Dont get me rong though, i havent been in your car so im not for shure if this is whats rong, but theres a good chance.

bingo... balance your front tires, then check if that's the problem. Depending on where you go, it should be like $10 a wheel

thanks for the help guys... I've been at my whit's end... not to mention most of the mechanics around my house kept trying to feed me BS about different 'problems' that the vibration could be from... luckily I know better... Told the lot of 'em to pound sand... unfortunately now i'll have to go across town if ever I have wish or need to get my car fixed without any 'complications'

Around the differential there are rubber housing in I believe 2-3 places with brackets... If they get dry rotted or lose they can cause vibration only at certain speeds..... check your driveshaft also for any lose bolts..... but check the tire balance first ....

I seem to have this problem also?? when I cruise past 50mph I start getting some really bad vibration!!! I run brand new rims/profiles. I checked the ball joints, tension rods, control arms and even the strut mounts-(thought they were warped!!) but still no solution?? I haven't checked the alignment yet though prolly will do next in a few!!!

First things to start off with are get your tires balanced and have the wheels checked for dents, bends, etc. If it persists, check and replace as necessary, tie rod ends, T/C rods or bushings, ball joints, heck even your struts/springs could be messed up/loose/blown, but those would probably do it all the time. You could also have some sort of frame damage. If you ever have an issue with vibration or pulling, check your tires (including tire pressure) and suspension components first.

As mentioned above, many of use know poorly balanced tires or severly damaged rims could cause the vibration, i would suggest inspecting front and rear end suspension components, such as swaybars/bushings, ball joints, control arms/bushings, etc, if your car still has original struts, consider upgrading to a tighter/smoother setup, Monroe or other aftermarket manufacturer.

I had the same vibration problem and it turned out to be the rack and pinion was worn. Put your car on jack stands and move the wheels back and forth listening to what makes noise and to spot where the play is.Also my outer tie rod was also worn out, you will be able to locate the "slop" in the movement.Good luck

most likely ur wheel is bent, off balance, or wheel bearing.
