Hey everyone! Guys and Gals i bought 1993 q45 and I'm having fits with it. Let me start from the beginning so everyone can have a clear understanding of what has happened. The car had severe interior problems(cosmetic) but the car only has 97,000 miles, run good, and has good body. The valve cover gaskets were leaking bad, so i changed the right side cranked the car up and it run fine. Then i changed the left side, i cranked the car and it smoked real bad from the exhaust and missed. And the one of my coils started melting and i shut engine down. I went back and checked my connections at coil connectors, i had two that was brittle and damaged when i plugged back in. So i went to salvage yard, called salvage yards, and dealer. I found coil harness off i 30 but it was a little different. The connectors didnt have the two small wires that go into the clip part of the connector. I installed anyway likie a dummy and installed a new coil but it did the same thing after about 30 seconds of running. Its getting extremely hot. Im new to the infiniti world. I realy like the car but i want to find a new coil harnees to completely replace, but i cant find. Does anyone know where i can get or have one. And does this sound like a wiring problem or could something else be going on?
Please Please help

Try Infiniti of Scottsdale and give them your VIN number so they can find the harness(s) for you. Should only cost ~$100 plus shipping. But beware those harnesses have been sitting some time so they are not the brand brand new but definitely better than OEM used.

Never EVER use parts from a car that is not identical to yours. Unless of course you are a electrical engineer in this instance.

Thanks for the insight on Scottsdale. Does the coil burning up sound like the harness and coil connectors?

Did everything work fine before you resealed the valve covers?

Sounds like you need a new or OEM used coil and harness or two (For both sides).

I have never heard of a coil pack heating up like that. Are you talking about one of the individual coils that sit on the top of each spark plug, or the ignitor that bolts on to the top of the cover that attaches to the rocker cover? If you have damage to coil subharness, I would replace that, and then anything else that's obviously damaged...

Yes the individual coil. I had no problem with this until i damaged the connectors going back together they were brittle and two fell apart.

The wiring in the coil harnesses gets as brittle as the connectors. On the worst ones (yours?) you can hear the wire's insulation cracking if you bend the harness just a bit. Unless you switched a couple connections in error, it sounds like yours has a short in the harness, and replacement of the entire harness, new or used, is the only option. Did you get a replacement coil? Seen that #1 and #5 are different from the others?

Contact Dsagers in the parts forum. He may have what you need and won't sell you junk. I have coils if you need another.

Did you re-wrap the wires in new high temperature electrical tape or were the wires just as fragile as the old harness?

The new harness i got was in great condiont flexible and soft so i didn't re-wrap. Man i feel like im chasing ghost. I got the car running good(other than the door lock and power seat issues) now it wont shift into overdrive. It shifts good in all gears,no slipping, but will not engage even if i manual shift it.

Well problems are to be expected with a expensive V8 Rear Wheel Driver Japanese flag ship.

Check the transmission using AT-CHECK found in the service manual.
