Hey,

I have a 1993 Nissan D21 Hardbody Pickup KA24E pickup with 314,000km. I am having trouble driving the truck and I am thinking it is the catalytic converter. When driving it is very hesitant, and lagging especially when going up hill. My bro complained when driving for 30 minutes the cat absolutely stank like sulphur. There is a definite loss of power. Also it heats up quite quick. I have included some pics to help.

Here's the front:

The back:

Here's a video of me tapping the cat:http://tinypic.com/player.php?v=npnm8n&s=4

Tell me what you guys think?

Hook a vacuum gauge up, hold RPMs at around 2500-3000, watch to see if gauge drops. The gauge dropping means plugged exhaust.

A vacuum gauge can be hooked up on any vacuum line after the throttle plate.

Alright so I replaced the cat, and low and behold my truck still hesitates. It is an intermittent hesitation in all gears, and especially when going up a hill it is VERY hesitant, and has no power. I recently changed the O2 sensor 500km ago. Any ideas?

Did anyone ever come up with a fix on this? I am having the same problem with my truck and was about to pull my cat off.

the easiest way to check for a plugged cat is to pull the o2 sensor and drive around. If any power returns then thats your problem most likely, its very simple. Far as the issues people are describing it sounds like dead cylinders, intermittently because of loose injector connections. Check for any corrosion in there which is quite common and clean them. Also, get an FSM from phatg20.net and read through the troubleshooting guides. peace.

Have you checked the distributor and spark plug wires? I have a 93 V6 and had similar problems that this fixed.

I was doing some searching because my 93 has a bad hesitation at 4k RPM and above. From what I was reading a commong problem could be a coked up EGR valve. I am going to run some seafoam through it this weekend to see if that clears it up a bit. Will keep you posted.
