under the intake manifold along the engine block. removed from underneath, bolted from the trans side. Remove your intake piping and you will see it tucked under the intake.

The guy at the parts place appearantly hasent done a U13 starter. You need to remove the rubber boot going from your air filter to the intake manifold. I usually leave it attached to the air flow meter and airfilter box. I just disconntect the connectors and air hoses coming off it at the intake and valve cover and pull the little vaccume line in the boot off the boot. once that is out look down at the trans bell housing you will see 2 bolts that have 14mm heads on the firwall side of the block. Those are your starter bolts. The starter is stabbed into the bell housing from the other side. You have 2 electrical connections to the starter you need to disconnect. one is the gray connector right abounve the bell housing where the highest starter bolt is. The other is the positive cable from the battery, that is accessed from underneath the car going up inbetween the power sterring rack and the axel. It is a 12mm nut. BTW you must disconnect the battery before you start this job. Once you have the 2 14mm bolts off ,the 12mm nut off and the grey connector disconnected it drops out through the area between the rack and the axle.

If you need a visual aid, if you have a digital camera take a picture of the boot and airbox i was telling you about and I can modify the picture to point out the important areas of disassembly and post it back up. I dont have a U13 to take a picture of or I would do it. Post the pic and I will modify it to help.

Ok heres picture one. picture mod 2 will follow. when you have accomplished all instructions in each pic the boot,AFM and top of air cleaner will simply lift out of the car exposing the top of the trans. If you dont find your starter then or are unsure where to go snap a shot and I will do the same with those photos.

Ok if you were to take a picture standing on the drivers side of the car looking down at an angle toward where the trans and engine meet I could likely point out the bolts to the starter . As this picture is taken looking straight down you can not see the bolts due to the heater lines obstructing the veiw. Look at the picture below to gain reffrence where it is at though.

i am not sure what you mean by cranking noises. not much you can do wrong unlees you didnt bolt it up all the way or didnt connect the connector right.

You may have gotten a bad starter.Does it turn the engine at all? As long as the starter is flush with the bellhousing I am thinking maybe you got a bogus starter. This is assuming you got all the electrical connections securly fastened.

Out of curiosity, why did you replace the last starter?

I think this new one has a problem. Its not a nissan replacement starter is it?
