Hi everyone, this is a great board, I am a long time lurker but first time poster, I hope someone can help.

My 1993 J30 is making this odd rattling noise. It is almost like a if you put pennies in a can and then roll the can (not shake it). It only happens when you accelerate and when you or rolling, never while it is stopped. Also, it is very slight. In order to hear it you have to have the radio down, window down, and head almost out the window. I have no idea what this could be. Again, it is a a rolling rattling sound; also it is higher pitched. I hope that someone can help me. I would like to have some idea of what is wrong before I spend a lot of money getting it diagnosed by a mechanic. Thanks!

That would be my guess. I just had the driver's side exhuast manifold replaced and you can hear a sound similar to what you are describing now more than before. (At least the exhaust leak is gone.)

If the rattling/grinding starts happening every once in awhile at start too, its your flywheel. They eventually lose teeth.

I had the same problem on my Q with the heat shields rattling.. Actually on this Q the upper shield rattled as well because one of the bolts came loose... might check that out.

Y'all are on point! I did just have some exhaust work done, so that would definitely explain it! Is this going to harm my car? Does it need to be fixed or is it more of an annoyance than a major issue. Thanks again!

no just check the sheilds, occasionally i find asphalt pebbles inthe sheilds that will rattle at the right RPM.

I just had mine adjusted yesterday when I dropped my car off for an oil change. They readjusted them for free. The shields still make a little noise, though. I'll probably have them taken off completely next time.

The J is running sweet!

Tell me about it! At first I thought there was something wrong with my trans because at first I would only hear the rattle when shifting gears, then I started to hear it when I would start the car in the morning. That's when I figured it out. A friend of mine used to have an Acura Legend about 8 years ago and he had the same problem. So glad it wasn't the trans!
