My transmission will not go into Drive when the shifter is against the stop. I have to pull it about 1/4 to 5/16 of an inch away from the stop before Drive will engage. This problem started 6 to 8 months ago. Otherwise the transmission runs fine. I took the car to a shop and had them replace the fluid and the filter. I also asked them to check the transmission linkage and was told that there were no adjustments. According to the J30 manual there is a cable that can be adjusted which I proceeded to do. First I loosened the locknut and took all the slack out of the cable, after which I backed off 1 turn. There was no change in the shifter position. I then tried over tightening the cable to a small degree with no better results. After that I backed off again on the cable and have been driving the car that way ever since. The transmission seems to be working fine and I have never gotten a Check AT light on my dash. My car has 267,000 miles on it. Any solutions or thoughts? I am hoping that this is not a precursor to developing problems.
Thank You All,
