I have 93 D21 4x4, the owners manual says it should take 3.5 quarts with oil filter change. That gets it a little over the low mark on the dip stick. It takes about 4.25 quarts to get it to the full mark. Do I have a dip stick problem or is this normal?

Also does anyone have a tip on getting the oil filter off with making a complete mess. I have tried stuffing rag under the filter to catch the oil when I remove the filter but that did'nt help much. The oil seems to get all over the suspension, then it dribbles oil on the driveway for the next week.

Thanks

Are you sure you're reading the correct column on the capicities chart in the manual? The "imperial qt" measurements are lower than the "US quart" measurements.

My '97 manual says 4 3/8 quarts for the 4x4 with a filter change... preetty close to your observations.

As far as the oil filter mess, I would love to hear suggestions too. I just spray everything down with about half of a can of brake parts cleaner when I'm done to clean up... better than a messy driveway.

Try making a funnel out of an old oil bottle or washer fluid bottle. I used to have a collection I made for all the different cars I used to see in the shop. Grab a box cutter and shape it to whatever you need.

There's not much you can do about the spillage in removing the filter. Just stuff a rag underneath to catch what you can and mop up the rest.

I'm assuming your truck is a 4 cylinder? My 98 takes just over 4 quarts with filter.

3.5 sounds like an imperial qt. measurement. The V6s take less....3.5 quarts would be about right for a VG motor.

It is a 4 cyl. and I double checked the manual and it says 3 1/2 qt US and 2 7/8 Imp.

Cutting a little catch can out of an old bottle is a great idea. I will give that a try on my next oil change.

Thanks

I actually have a universal kit I'm not using I'd sell for $40+shipping. It uses 2 PH8A 1 qt filters, so it'll increase your oil capacity by a couple quarts.
