1993 Altima startup problem, rpm goes crazy

When i tried to start up my car, the starter wouldnt engage. Thought it was a problem with the starter so i pushed the car and started it up (manual). I had it in first gear and the rpm went all the way up to the red line (had to press in the clutch) any ideas about what it could be?

i just changed the distributor a couple a weeks ago and i havent had any problems with it.

sounds like a stuck throttle cable...so when its in gear the engine revs to redline? at least thats how it sounds..

no, after i pushed the clutch in. I checked the throttled cable and i couldn't find anything wrong. Going to double check that.
