Any suggestions to correct a this problem?

If I floor it the shift is smooth, but any less and it feels awkward.

1 to 2 shift on g20 auto trannys is known to be a problem. The problem occurs because of a faulty accumulator spring. There is a transgo kit that will fix the problem. The part is cheap but the installation will cost you a lot. If you need more info go to G20.net and in the search put transgo kit.
