I have a 1993 Nissan 240sx SE. It doesn't seem to like the rain... When it rains it has problems at idling speeds/ low speeds. First, it will idle erraticly. Then after a little while of idling poorly, it will stall out. I can try to start it again, and it will turn, but will not run. If I give it some gas it will eventually turn and run, but it still idles badly and I have to keep giving it gass for it to run. Also, the smell of gas is everywhere. Smoke is also coming out of the exhaust upon starting it. Amplified exhaust fumes can be smelled in the interior and around the car along with the gas smells. Again, it only does this in the rain. It has only done this once before. This time it died and did not want to start. If I wait a few hours and try to start it when it is not raining, it will start up and drive fine. The gas pedal didn't seem to want to respond at first either. Also, it took more than 10 secs. to start. Anyone have any suggestions?

i wrote a big cushy post with a nice sotry of me being electrocuted in the rain, but it timed out so i'll give you the cliff notes of my discussion

check 1. plug wires 2. rotor and cap 3. plugs or coil , all in that order.

a misty day turned my plug wires into a very dangerous short that bit me. but it also made the car run like ***.

It started out only doing it in the rain, then doing it at all times. Then it started blowing out even more white smoke. The engine's fried...

sounds like overheated.

eitherway another pissibility would have been the temp sensor.

It could be fuel injectors cuz it happened to me same thing.... And you prolly shouldn't have driven it w/ it smoking that bad... usualy not a good thing. Hope you can get everything working. Hit me up on aim or email me check my profile for both

I agree. Mine was smelling like a lot of gasoline and it was hard to start and it was all because my injector for cylinder 2 was stuck wide open, dumping fuel into the cylinder and causing a ruckus.

simple way to check if they're stuck open is to pull all your spark plugs and turn it over. if they are stuck then fuel should shoot out the plug hole!

Check around the ECU inside the passenger compartment. make sure no water is leaking down or getting onto the ECU from a rust hole or thru the firewall or floor board somewhere. Pull the kick panel off and also check to make sure the rectangular blue plastic wiring connector is fully pushed in on both sides.

It was definately the head gasket. With this much white smoke... Also, it seemed to be using coolant. The injectors are getting cleaned too. Timing chain should be getting replaced. I've searched for the head gasket, but most threads were about whether or not the gasket was toast. Is this a common problem with Nissans or is there a common malfucntion that causes it to overheat?

And the worst part of it is... I've only had the car for like 3 months and I put 4,000 miles on it. Then the engine died. I also might have an automatic transmission fluid leak. At least the car is Southern so it has no rust. Oh, and anyone know how to read the ECU. The mode selection thing is confusing. I don't have a green light either.

id say spark, the cold makes the spark bad so it doesnt fire fully or at all. thus letting a/f out the exhaust

to read the ecu you have to turn the key on and turn the little screw in the back which is by the l.e.d. either green or red..you turn that screw fully clockwise hold for ATLEAST two seconds then turn it back fully counter clouckwise. then you will see a series of flashes..there are going to be 2 different sets..the first set has a short pause in between each flash then the second has a very quick pause....for instance...first time it flashes then short pause ...second flash another short pause..third flash another short pause then the next flash..after this flash you will have a even shorter pause (very quick) followed by another flash and then another quick pause and then flash...then it will start over..this is a code 33....the slow pause interval adds up to one number and the quick pause intervals add up to another number..then you put the 2 together..understand?
