Tonight, I was driving my Jetta while my girlfriend followed me in my 240SX.

While were driving, I noticed in my rearview that my right headlight on the 240 is a little loose. When driving at night, it shakes a little bit...it can get annoying if you're the car in front of the 240......it flutters up and down really annoyingly and goes from bright to dim as the car drives.

I just got home and I popped up the lights...I tugged on them a bit...the left one is firm...solid as a rock. The right one is also firm but has a little bit of play, kind of mushy. To be clear, I'm talking about the entire module...not just the sealed-beam headlight itself: the WHOLE pop-up assembly is shaking.

Question: How do I tighten this thing up so it doesn't shake?

I looked under there and there's the big rod there. I just can't figure out what would cause this. Is there a bushing or something that's gone bad? The car's never been in an accident.

Absent any reply on here, I tore into the headlight this morning and believe I have fixed the problem.

I took off the side shield and looked at the rod and motor. I pulled up and down on it and noticed that the motor was holding, but that the rod was jiggling in the sockets like it was too short and needed to be tightened up. I saw some nuts on the rod and decided to explore.

I took off the rod ("link" in Nissan-speak). I twisted the rod one turn (360 deg) while holding the end-bolt, thus lengthening the rod one turn.

The result: SOLID AS A ROCK headlight...and it's aimed perfectly.

I don't know how long the headlight had been like this, but boy does this resolve an annoying issue!
