I'm about to help my friend do an automatic to manual conversion. I was wondering if there was a different transmission we could use, with the stock engine, that has more aggressive gearing than just a "manual" opposite.

The manual transmission for our cars is more aggressive than the auto slushbox (4 speed auto versus 5 speed manual). If you're wanting a close ratio gear box, you're not going to find anything that's just drop in AFAIK.
