i go to change the spark plugs on my '93 240sx a little while ago and as i lift up the wire covers, all i see is oil. then a little while later i see some smoke out of the exhaust.

im guessing a gasket is blown somewhere? but i dont know what gasket or how to replace it. any hints or troubleshooting steps would be appreciated. thanks. i have emissions testing due this month and i dont need burning oil...

Welcome to NICO.

I edited your post for easier searchablity. please try to use that format in the future.

What you have is a leaking valve cover oring gasket. replace the gasket and all should be good. The smoke out of the exhust was likely because the oil entered the cyl when you replaced the plug. It will burn off. If you wires are saturated with oil it would be a good idea to replace those as well.

thanks! ill try to keep to the format in the future.

ive searched for valve cover here on the forum but i didnt find any instructions or tips on replacement.

i have both the FSM and a regular chilton's manual, i guess i'll take a look at those later on today.

just look down at the valve cover its pretty straight forward 12 or 14 10mm nuts and bolts, a hose ,4 pliug wires and it comes right off. flip it over, theres you oring strip and the outer gasket. replace both of those , replace the half moon cam plugs [may be part of outer gasket] clean the areas where the cam plugs sit of old silcon sealer. apply a very thin coat of new sealer to the cam plug half moons and pop them in. install new gaskets to cover and reinstall. Very important here, Dont over torque the valve cover bolts. tighten them finger tight then 90 degree turn. If you go to tight you will rip the threads from the head.

with the plugs still in and the valve cover on [only the plug wires removed. spray some brake clean in there to thin out the oil. Use compressed air to blow out the liquid. Make sure you place a rag offer the opening when you shoot air in there or you will be taking a shower in oil..lol then check to make sure a bulk of the oil is gone and do the job. any residual oil that gets in there will burn off pretty quickly.
