1993 240sx: ignition resistor/condenser melted . see picture.

This is not my car. The guy replaced the resistor/condenser but he still has a problem starting. any ideas how this happened. i dont think any fuses were blown.

the car runs ok once it get running but only starts intermittently. car wont restart if shutoff after it has been running. 5 speed.

Looks like a wad of electrical tape to me.

If it is, unravel it and have a look at the wiring, make sure there's no bare wire showing, if there is, wrap it up separately before re-wrapping the whole mess.

Also, check underneath that...lump, for scarring on the surface underneath. I seriously doubt it, but it could be shorting to the body there.

Other'n that, if it is melted, replace it, make sure the bare metal is covered and all brackets to hold it are in place.

All that said...I really don't think that little bit has much to do with your intermittent start.

I would troubleshoot this from another angle. What caused it to melt in the first place? Whatever originaly caused it to melt MAY be related to your starting problem.

Replaceing a part does not always mean you fixed what caused the part to go bad.

Just my thoughts.

seems as if ur wires ar grounding out causeing them to melt and internaly possibly crossing the other wires till cools

Actually if the wires shorted they'd continue to melt until there was no longer a sufficient connection to produce enough heat to melt them.

Do you know where i can get the replacement part for the ignition resistor/condensor? i just had the same issue. it melted and i need to see where i can get the replacement part for it. Thanks.
