1992 Infiniti Q45/owned 6 yearsreplaced fuel pump last year

CURRENT SITUATION - She stop on me but would restart and then cut off again after a short distance. But then next day no start.

Alternator was bad/battery low so I replaced alt. charged battery. It was a hard/slow crank, ran to warm but then no crank.Had starter tested/pass/pass/pass but replaced solenoid while I had starter off but still no crank.

Replaced starter relay- still no crank

had a cracked hose under the plenum so I replaced all hoses, knock sensor and cleaned IAC- No crank

Replaced MAF - no crank

Checked all fuses- no visibly bad fuse

Replaced black box next to starter relay- no start

Lights are bright - Solinoid clicks - I have observed a spark inside starter relay but I THINK thats just it engaging

Notice a click inside the ignition relay area/next fuse compartment inside the car

When I turn the ignition switch to the on position- RADIO shuts off but lights stay on. It seems to grounding out but I don't know.

Any help would truly be appreciated.

Your off to a great start.

Did you buy the car like this or is this just something new?

Has the ECU harness or ignition ever been touched?

Any aftermarket alarms or remote starters?

I would ask and see what T3 charges for an inspection.

Welcome to NICO.

This is a new problem. I've had the car for 6 years and the only problem I've had was the fuel pump.

Don't believe it's security/anti-theft related, the light doesn't stay on while turning the key.

Neither the ECU nor the ignition has been touched to my knowledge. No aftermarket alarm or remote starter.

Yeah, I'm hoping to figure it out soon or I will have to bite the bullet and go to T3. I wish I had gone before I sinked so much time and money into the car. I guess part of it is, I've put so much time and effort into it that now I want satisfaction of completing the job.

Forgot to mention changed spark plugs, cleaned throttlebody, changed oil, replaced fuel filter, replaced valve cover gaskets (gasket maker) and replaced glove compartment

I checked 100 times (tomorrow 101) to make sure everything was hooked up the right way.

Thanks for responding and I appreciate the welcome.

Just for money's sake try unlocking the door passenger preferably because of less use to see if the alarm is some how still on.

Don't feel bad for putting money into the car, unless you need the money to go else where.

Check to see also that the knock sensor and fuel injector harness's are connected.

But unless a wire is corroded some where I don't know what else it could be.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

I don't feel bad about putting the money into the car because, as the family says in unison, I LOVE MY CAR! But apparently my budget has gone on a very strict diet and I have used a lot of points.

I'm sure it's something simple or something major but I will keep you posted as to what happens. You help a lot because tomorrow I have new things to check out.

When it's over, I may certify myself as a 1992 Infiniti Q45 sortof-mechanic.

Ok, I rechecked everything.1. Took starter out cleaned connections2. Cleaned battery cables3. Doulble checked fuses4. Checked wiring

Tapped on the starter and it tried to crank every time in nuetral but not park

I believe my problem is either the starter (eventhoung AZ says its ok) solenoid or battery (eventhough been charged) because when it tried to crank it seemed as if the battery was low.

Next step: off with the starter again back to autozone to recheck, I don't know if they can check the solenoid.

Recharge the battery, if all checks out, I'm going to shoot the Q with a 12 gauge or charge a dollar to let people beat the hell out it. Giving her a reason to be dead.

Will it crank in Drive or neutral?

I would then check the Inhibitor switch.

Run this test to confirm:

If the screen stays at [AT CHECK] then it could be the throttle postition sensor, 1 postion sensor, kickdown switch, diagnostic information display or the A/T control unit is bad.

But again it would be much be easier with a Consult.

See page AT-56 though AT-58 in the 1994 Q45 FSM: http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/Q45/1994_Q45/at.pdf

Good luck and save the gun for a robber.

Removed starter, took it apart, and cleaned the parts with gasoline and put it back together, reinstalled and she's running like a charm.

Thanks
