Ok i called several people and they told me its the transmission. This is the situation, I got a 1992 Q45 garage kept for 3 to 4 years that has not moved due to engine problems. over the years the car has gotten chrome rims and some other exterior upgrades but never got to move because me and my family kept moving so we never got the chance to work on it. i got the Q45 as a gift for turning sixteen years old from my parents (was thier car originally). Now i got to put money into it. i put a new engine in with my Dad and by new i mean an engine with 50,000 from ebay. I put everything and i mean everything in perfectly. The engine cranked and ran perfect and i mean Perfect. Remember everything is connected perfectly and also the car is off the ground still at this point. Ok when we put it in gear the tires only goes forward, and still goes forward on neutral and reverse. when we put the car on the ground the car didnt want to move. I called some transmission shops and they told me that since the car has not moved in a long time that the transmission went bad. They said that the cylinoids in the automatic transmission went bad due to not moving the car for 3 to 4 years. I kno i know why did i not do this job sooner well I was only 12 when this car was still operational. The car has been kept in the garage ever since my Mom blew it. All the pistons were at 20 PSI except for one which was at 120 psi, any way that engine I took it out (with my dad) and took it apart by myself and recycled it so its nomore. Well let me know what you think of this problem. NOTE: Me and my dad put this engine in twice because our first time was perfect but my dad put the freaking black transmission cover (the one that covers the flexplate) backwards so because of his mistake we took it out again and put it in again. Although we took the transmission and engine apart again the transmission was still asembled perfectly (at first we thought we did something wrong) so this concluded that we didnt do anything wrong and that the transmission was bad. Just let me know what u think because im about to buy a transmission with 50,000 miles same as the engine. And yes i know a used Q that needs parts is an expensive hooker trust me i kno that better than anyone because i was there and now it almost operational but still needs a new transmission.

Assuming that you need a new transmission (which I don't have a clue about, so please check that out first, of course), the best thing to do is to get a remanufactured one from Nissan/Infiniti. Contact Joe Tsensky at http://www.everythinginfiniti.com ... they used to run about $1850 (with a core return), plus about $100 shipping. Labor to put it in is extra - cost me about $900 at the dealer, but it sounds like you and your Dad have the skills to do this yourselves.

Welcome to NICO!

You have stumbled on the best collection of early Q45 knowledge anywhere... I would browse through the articles at http://www.Q45.org, and look through everything you can read here. Hopefully you replaced the timing chain guides on your replacement engine before installing it in the car. I suspect that's what cratered the first time?

As far as the the transmission, yep... it sure sounds like a transmission failure. I would lean toward having it checked by someone with a Consult to make sure that it's getting all of the signals it needs. You might also run the A/T self test (available in the factory service manual) to see what codes you get. If you don't have the factory service manual, check out http://www.phatg20.net to download one... the earliest one they have is the 1994 version, but it will get you through a lot of things...

Just be sure to have everything warmed up first or the test won't work. Don't quote me on this, but I think that if it's the solenoids, they can be replaced from the bottom with just a pan drop. Not sure on that though...

Good luck!

in my experience its pretty normal for the wheels to move even in neutral when its jack off the ground..

since you've had the car for a long time (or its in the family), can you give us any further history on the trans? Did it work OK until you let it sit?
