I was away on vacation, the car started to make an odd grinding noise from the bellhousing area. Took it to a private transmission shop. He said the planetary something or other is broken. Car drives, but just enough to drive the car home from my 1st day vacation. He said to drive it home in 3rd gear, as it is a more direct 1:1 ratio...made it home no problem...grinds and shakes on start/stop driving...but ok in 3rd gear. I found a couple used trannys, but I need to know what ones will fit my car. My production date is 9/91...what trannies will fit? Getting a new one or repairing this one really does not seem like an option.

The 1990-1993 models had the same transmission - but I'd be very leary of going used on this one unless you're getting a good deal on the installation (as in a buddy with a lift swapping it for beer).

There are numerous threads about failed transmission rebuilds and used installations...

Welcome to NICO!

Is this Paul from BC with the really low kilometers one?

Must get a factory refurbished one. You do not want a none factory rebuild unless it is a high performance shop that has everything including a dynamometer.

No. I live in New Brunswick. My Q has 200,000 KM's (124,000 miles) Not really willing to spend $2000 or higher to get it going. My father is a retired aircraft mechanic, who can fix anything. He will be doing the work. He has a lift and all the right tools. What is the usual time to remove and replace? Any surprises? I can get one for $350US, looking into shipping on it now...if it lasts a couple yrs, thats OK. Prolly selling in the next yr anyway...looking for a newer one.

What if it lasts 30 days or 6 months. Will dad change them often for you? With all the right specialty tools.....screw jacks and transmission jack.....3-4' long extensions to reach the top bolts, removing exhaust, drive shaft etc takes around 5-6 hours with experience and 2 people [ocassional use].........we charge 7 man shop hours. ~~ $500.

Don't forget to change rear main engine seal and flush the old ATF out a few times.........clean the in radiator heat exchanger or use an external cooler.

Used trannies on 10-14 year old cars are never a good buy unless you can see it was changed a few years ago......then owner abuse and sitting without running can take its toll.

Sometimes you get lucky on a JDM takeout less so from the domestic junkyards.

I can get a jspec 30,000 mile transmission from California for $600 and shipping...6 month warranty. Does this sound fair?
