1992 Q45 ABS noise

I was wondering if anyone could tell me why my ABS is making grinding-like noises everytime I stop on slick surfaces. Is this a common problem or could it be serious? Thanks all!

The ABS actuator is on the right side firewall - so the noise is transmitted pretty well to the driver. The job of the ABS is to modulate (pulse) the brakes at a very rapid pace so that the wheels don't lock up. What you're hearing is the pump pulsing the hydraulics rapidly. Perfectly normal as 911/Q45 said.

The clunk you hear and feel in the brake pedal sometimes as you back out of the garage or driveway is the ABS self-test - also normal. I notice mine more on a steep hill.

I've never had my ABS kick in on the street, on wet grass a time or two. It made me wonder for awhile whether it worked. Even though there's plenty of opportunities for panic stops w/these idiots around here.

PS: Change your Brake Fluid to avoid expensive ABS problems. It's cheap insurance.

That's a relief, i thought that was a problem i'd have to look into. Funny, it wasn't as noticeable on other cars i've owned w/ abs. Nontheless, good info.
