I have recently purchased a 1992 240sx( it might be a se, not sure.)I believe it has the KA24DE engine. The person i bought it from said they where in a parking lot and the top timing chain broke.

My question is.-Will i need a whole kit or just the chain? because if it's just the chain broke, can i just change the chain?

I looked up the prices and for just the upper chain is $45-50and for a whole kit its $65-70would it be worth paying the extra $20 to get the whole kitor should i just get the chain?

thanks

Usually when your timing chain breaks you get bent valves.

Unless you know how the timing chain broke don't just stick another one on there or it will probably break as well.

I was going off of what the person said when i bought the car.

But yesterday i pulled off the valve cover and low and beholdthe upper timing chain guide was broke, not the chain.

Am i still able to drive my 240 without the upper guide or should i replace it?

if you mean that top plastic piece then no you do not need it.. it should be able to run perfectly fine minus the marble noise you usually hear from a ka24de

man i hope you got that car cheap. didnt dual cams come with metal guides and single cams came with plastic guides? so theirs a big piece of loose metal somewhere around your lower chain? while your at it also take off the side chain guide
