well if it's the starter that could be making the grinding noise, you can pop your starter pretty easily and have it checked.

Did you check the fan clutch or check the fan for any black markings? The fan should be a white plastic, if it's got black markings on it, it's comin from somewhere around that guy. I've seen it cut up the shroud before from the inside.

Might be a long shot but could be timing chain rattle on the top of the valve cover. Even possibly the top guide broke off, I have had that happen before.

Remove the three front belts, then start the motor up and see if the noise is gone; rev it up for a few seconds to listen for any noise.

If the noise is gone, then the problem is:1 - water pump bearings2 - alternator bearings3 - power steering pump4 - A/C idler pulley5 - A/C compressor if system is on

What sorta noise was it when you had timing chain rattle? I have a 1994 Nissan Primera and im hearing a strange rattle noise as well. Its not constant and only occurs once the engine is warmed up. However i do suspect it to be the timing chain?? It appears to be coming from that end of the head of the engine. Ive had the head checked, eg rockers etc and it isnt related to those.
