1992 Maxima SE with VE engine VTC noise AFTER engine warm up

My car is making the VTC noise but only after warming up to normal on the temp gauge. As long as the car is cold it runs smooth and quiet. The warmer the car gets the louder the VTC's are. I've already tried the grounding trick and it made no difference. Any ideas why it does this ONLY after warming up? I thought these things made noise from start up and usually got quieter once warm.
