my 1992 infinity Q45 was running fine i took it on the freeway gave it some gas it started to get up and go and then it just died and now i can not get it to start. I checked the control panel thing in the trunck and it looks fine. i changed the fuel filter and that did not help. It was smelling like gas once in a while for about two weeks before it died. Does anyone have any idea what it might be. Thank you

Do you hear the fuel pump when you first turn the ignition switch on? Did you have fuel pressure when you replaced the filter? You should be able to squeeze the fuel hose (line with the filter) when you first turn the key on and feel it pressurize after turning it on... The fuel pump control module that mounts to the trunk package trey (remove rear deck cover to get to bolt on right side to remove) has two failure modes. Mine had no damage to the connector, but the transistor-type components on the inside were toast.

The other (more catastrophic) option is a timing chain guide failure.

I think you are smelling fuel because your fuel pump is still working. If your car has over 120K most likely it will require a new engine because your timing chain guides have broken. Look on ebay. There are lots of JDM engines that will make your car feel like new again. Sorry this happened but if you like your car overall, then replacing the engine is still cheaper than buying a new car.

Good Luck

Chain guide-related death can cause severe roughness and sputtering, or it will just suddenly die, which also is what happens when the fuel pump or FPCU dies. Please update us!
