There has always been a huge push when my car goes from 1st to 2nd gear. My car is an AT, and my dad told me that all the Infinitis that year has the same problem, and that it's normal. This car was given to me by my dad, so I don't know too much about it's history. When he bought the car, it had about 40,000 miles, and now it has 60,000.

Im sorry, what do you mean by huge push? It sort of lunges forward? Not all Infinitis from 1992 have that problem; in fact, I've never ever heard of it. The G20 is ranked over and over as Infiniti's most rock-solid reliable car, with almost no major issues.

I have a friend with a 92 or 93 G20 and I've noticed some harshness with the 1->2 shifts. I think that's typical of Nissan transmissions, especially on 4 cylinders.

As far as "harshness" my 1988 Nissan Sentra had that problem. Never bothered fixing it. I got the car handed to me from mom and dad and assumed it was supposed to be that way. :)

1992 G-20's do have a firm 1st to 2nd shift. That was one of the complaints when those vehicles were brand new, transmissions in that vehicle have a slightly higher line pressure than other Infiniti vehicles. The internal brake band (holding device) comes on between the 1st to 2nd shift which can create a slight shift shock with the line pressure at the top of the scale. I have also noticed when the rubber in the 3 motor mounts get fatigued, the excess movement of the engine/trans will tend to transfer an even more noticeable shift shock to the body. I would suggest getting ALL the motor mounts checked, with the age of the vehicle, not necessarily the mileage, a good chance you need the mounts replaced. I personally would rather have a firm shift than one that slides the shift to the next gear. Hope this may help!
