1992 240sx What are these pipes?

Just wanted to know if the pipe coming from exhaust hooked to the hose that is in the pic? Thanks.

*Click the link zerothread?id=26150 Read this.*Thats your AIV, its there but some say you dont need it. actually I say you dont need it. I took mine off and pluged all the hoses, car runs great and engine bay is a little cleaner.

Just controls emissions. You may fail an emissions test though if they put a sniffer up your cars ***. Make sure you can put it back on if need be.

Thanks guys I plugged the pipe off and WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! Soooooo much quiter. I also added a cone filter. I bought the adapter at Autozone for $12. Don't see any difference in power but it looks cooloer lol. Talk to you guys later.

The AIV is only used during engine warm up then it diverts to atmosphere once at operating temp. The only way it would fail an emissions test is visually. It has nothing to do with tail pipe emissions once the car is at operating temp[ which is when a proper emissions test is performed] It is an emissions component designed to reduce hydrocarbons during warm up since the cat does not operate till it reaches operating temp.[about 600 degrees]
