Before I get some chalk and figure this out myself, does anyone know if the S13's steering ratio is variable? Like some cars have a higher steering wheel rotation to front wheel rotation ratio near center than out at the extremes. Or is the ratio constant?

The steering ratio is different for the inside or outside wheel. When turning a corner the inside wheel needs to turn more because it is tracking a tighter radius around the corner.

According to your definition of steering ratio (steering wheel angle relative to front wheel angle), the inside wheel has a lower steering ratio than the outside wheel.

If you consider the turing radius of an imaginary wheel that sits in the centerline of the vehicle (equivalent to the average turning of the inside and outside wheels) then you will find that most cars have a quicker (lower) ratio at high steer angles than when pointed straight ahead.

Now if you're talking about variable assist power steering, that is entirely different and unrelated to steering ratio.

Yes, I have read the Howstuffworks.com file on the matter.

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/steering1.htm

In specific I mean:"The steering ratio is the ratio of how far you turn the steering wheel to how far the wheels turn. For instance, if one complete revolution (360 degrees) of the steering wheel results in the wheels of the car turning 20 degrees, then the steering ratio is 360 divided by 20, or 18:1. A higher ratio means that you have to turn the steering wheel more to get the wheels to turn a given distance. However, less effort is required because of the higher gear ratio."

This is what I am asking about.

"Some cars have variable-ratio steering, which uses a rack-and-pinion gearset that has a different tooth pitch (number of teeth per inch) in the center than it has on the outside. This makes the car respond quickly when starting a turn (the rack is near the center), and also reduces effort near the wheel's turning limits."

Does the 240SX use variable-ratio steering?

Thanks, you saved me from getting out chalk, turning the wheel, and drawing lines to figure out to satisfy my curiosity.

stock is 17.2:1 or 14.2:1 for the hicas i think.

the only car i know of with the variable ratio is the new 5 series.
