I have a 1992 240SX with 126,XXX miles on motor and transmission. I've read some articles about how this sloppiness can be cured by replacing the small nylon bushing on the tip of the shifter so I decided to tackle the problem. When taking out the shifter, I found that the original bushing was still intact and the diameter matched that of the new. I removed the old and put the new one on anyway, but found that this did NOT help. I stuck a long screwdriver into where the bushing would be and tried to move it around to feel for play, but still no luck. My question is the following: Where is this slop coming from? How do I fix this problem (I do not want to buy a short shifter or B&M/B&M knockoff just yet)? I've played with the shifter on a 1993 and it was very firm with no play in neutral or in gear but it had 97,XXX miles. Thanks

Buy the B&M knock-off. Seriously, it's $40 off ebay and it cured all my shifting issues. Then the nylon bushing on it cracked and now my shifting is a bit sloppy again, but that's easily fixable, and what do you expect for $40?
