Need a much better description; such as:- ticking- metalic knock- location, front of motor or elsewhere- during idle or other RPMs

Don't want to thread jack but I have a rattling sound coming from the front of my 1991 240sx motor during idle and mid rang RPMs. Not sure what it could be

In your case, the timing chain guide(s) are most likely wiped out. Also if the motor has a top chain guide, it may be loose.

There was a Nissan technical bulletin issued that said on the DOHC the top chain guide and upper chain side guide can be removed. One or both of those guides could be making the noise. Both guides can be removed fairly easily without removing the both timing cover; only the top timing cover needs to be removed.

If you've done the above and the noise is still there, then the lower chain guide may be worn.

I had a ticking in the front of my engine and 20 min later I removed my top timing chain guide and it solved all of my problems. Its not hard to do. While you're in there you may as well replace the valve gasket too.
