First off I hope you all had a merry Christmas!

Today I pulled up to the shop where I work and left the key in the Q (I only leave it in when it is here in the fenced in area) and later I went out and opened the door and the alarm went off and it started honking; honk, honk, honk.... anyway I didn't know that it even had an alarm?!?! Do 1991 Q45's have alarms on them? If so than how are they activated, I mean most cars if you lock it with a key fob and unlock it with a key than the alarm goes off. The horn that was honking wasn't even the normal squeaky Q style honk but a totally different sound that I didn't even recognize. Anyway I took the key out and put it into the door and locked it and it stopped honking.

My next question,

I just purchased a Valet brand keyless entry system with remote start from a friend for $50. Has anyone ever used these before? What kind of quality are they? How hard are they to install?

First, they do have alarms factory. The switch on the door is probably going bad, either that or the lock cylinder... Theres a few things that can cause something like that.... What happens is the car thinks the car is still locked but it got opened.... You might do a search, it seems mostly applicable to 90-93 Q, I cant remember exactly what the problem narrows down to. The only way the alarm goes off is if a door opens when the theft system doesnt think it should.

The remote start things are a disaster to install, ive seen so many goofy things happen with Q from botched alarms.. unless you are VERY handy with electronics, reading wiring diagrams, solving electrical problems, and have a lot of patience, I would either suggest you either return the alarm system or have it installed by a pro...

I would NEVER install an aftermarket alarm on my Q...

valet is a good reliable system, but like wes said unless your good, have a pro do it. Qs are tricky, dont go to circut city or some other chain. go to the local shop with a good rep. average install price should be 140-200.

i know valet has an installer website so you can download any car, well almost any car, and have a step by step color coded guide to help you. maybe you could find the local dealer and pay them for the print out...in any case good luck!

Most SMART TECHNICANS will refuse to trouble shoot a Q with an aftermarket alarm without a 3 hour SURCHARGE.......................it takes that long to figure out the mess that was installed....................because there are NO as installled schematics drawn up and provided by installer!

We usually refuse outright until the Q has been returned to stock.

I am not putting an after market alarm system on it, it is just a keyless entry system with remote start.

I lock an unlock it several times a day with the key, do you think it could be the key cylinder wearing out?

I have a guy that is very handy with electronics, he installs stereo systems and backup cameras and all that.

There are some instructions with it but they all go right over my head. This may help the install guy if he doesn't know something about it.

if your really picky about your car you should also disasemble as much of the interior as you need to, i.e. glove box, kick panel, under steering wheel cover, and steering column cover, and lable all bolts screws and put them in seperiate bags. that ll save you some labor time, but most of all it wont be a rush to get the job done, cause the hard part is over. dont let them reasemble either. make sure the car or at least the work area is clean. leave clean towels on the floor for comfort. what ever helps the job go smoothly. the installer should appriciate it and hopefully when he runs accross the choice of, do it the right way, or who cares its not my car, he'll choose the right way! hopefully...

The factory alarm usually shows up when someone closes the door and locks it with the window open... then reaches in through the open window to unlock the door and open the door. The alarm sees a locked door being unlocked without turning the key cylinder and thinks a window was smashed in.

The remote start system and keyless entry will have nearly all of the same connections as an alarm with those features... the only difference is no siren and no shock sensor.

I have some schematic diagrams and list of how I installed mine - but I spent a week or two doing it along with several other projects.

http://www.q45.org/uploads/q45...5.pdf

Right click and save the pic and then you can zoom in on it larger... there are some notes about the logic the factory alarm uses.

Good luck!

Heath

Don't 94's have keyless entry? Why would you need to go aftermarket then?

I've been considering one because my locks had been redone. I have a key for the ignition and another for the doors, trunk, and glove box. Plus my valet key. I want to trim my key ring down. The weight of the extra keys (dorm closet, mailbox, house key, Jeep Key, Nissan key) keys can't be good for my ignition.

So getting a VIPER or Avital system isn't a good idea in a Q? Damn. I think I'd feel silly putting a CLUB on my steering wheel.
