Hello all,

I recently returned to the world of automotive vehicle ownership with the proud purchase of a 1991 Nissan pickup. It's seen better days and has some definite issues going on. One of which is the fact that neither door lock assemblies are working correctly. I can't seem to get the key in the driver's side lock, although it does lock from the inside (until you close the door again and it springs back into unlock) and the passenger's side lock worked once, but the second time I tried to use it, it broke the key and didn't lock. So basically, I have a non-locking vehicle as the the doors unlock themselves if you close them.

My question for you wise folks is; what can I do about this? I am not concerned about having my door and engine keys match, although this would be a plus.

I've been wrenching on my own bikes for years and never gave much thought to cars until a few years ago. But because of economic means and the fact I love bikes, I didn't buy a car til now. I am, however, committed to the idea of working on my vehicle myself (within reason) and would love to start small with an easy fix like this. I tried getting the door panel off to take a look and possibly lubricate things to get them running smoother, but can't seem to.

Additionally, I would like to know if there is a service manual available for my truck other than the one listed for $100 on amazon? Perhaps there is a PDF or someone willing to help a young, first time auto buyer mid twenties almost college graduate out?

Cheers,
Nicholas

Well, first off congrats :)
My Dad had an early 86.5 and as I recall the door locks on that truck required a person to lock the door, then hold the handle up as the door was shut to keep the doors from unlocking when latching. I would venture to guess this was to keep folks from locking their keys in the cab... I may be wrong on this. It has been awhile.

It sounds like your lock cylinders are worn out. I tend to just go to a local locksmith and have them take care of my locking issues with key fabrication or tumbler repair. If that is not something you are interested in you could always hit a local junkyard and find the new cylinders and keys and replace the assemblies.

As for a repair manual I do not personally know of any links without googleing anything. Libraries typically have a chiltons manual if you are strapped for cash though, owning such a book pays for itself pretty quick.
