I also have a Nissan D21 hardbody pickup and am having almost exactly the same problem as BlazedGlory. Only I just spent about $680 having a new AC compressor installed with a new expansion valve and receiver dryer as well. It gets very cold for a while and then it just starts getting warmer and warmer until I have to open my window. After a while the compressor kicks back on (I can feel the truck kind of hesitate or kind of lag) and then it starts getting cold again. Then I roll up the window. It can stay cold for 5 minutes or 45 minutes. It's very annoying. Especially since I just sank all this money into having air conditioning. The first thing I did in an effort to troubleshoot the problem was replace both AC relay switches (just for Blazed Glory's information they are on the left side engine wall and are identical). That did nothing. My mechanic suggested I replace the dual pressure switch next. Unfortunately they are no longer available. First I tried Advance Auto and then Auto Zone and then O'Riley's and then NAPA but to no avail. Then I tried my local Nissan dealer. They are no longer available even with Nissan. Then I drove about an hour and a half to High Point NC to a Nissan junkyard. They had numerous Nissan D21 hardbody's but only one vehicle had the same dual pressure switch. I had to remove the part myself and paid $10 for it. What a steal! That is if it works. To tell you the truth the one in my truck looks like it's in WAY better shape.
Unfortunately I think all my efforts to get this dual pressure switch are in vain. I also know it is possible to check the continuity on the part so I am going to wait until the compressor shuts off again and bring the truck in to my mechanic to have him test it with an ohm meter (mine quit working about two weeks ago. Perfect timing!).
So does anyone have any suggestions? I notice that BlazedGlory is having a similar problem but his always comes on when he starts his truck. Mine does not. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. With mine it's kind of playing Russian Roulette. You just never know when it's going to work and when it's not. He says he has not yet tested his dual pressure switch. All I can say is pray that that is not your problem and if it is I hope you have better luck finding one and if you DO happen to find a new one somewhere PLEASE let me know where that may be! PLEASE! Again though I just have a feeling that is not the problem and I have no idea what that is at this point.
If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. At this point I'm willing to try almost anything
