1991 Maxima problem
1991 Maxima problem
The exhaust on my 1991 Nissan Maxima has started to make a weird whooshing noise whenever I step on the gas pedal. Does anybody know what's wrong?

Are you sure the noise is coming from the exhaust?

whooshing...i know you're trying to be as descriptive as possible but it's hard to say without actualy hearing it. have you checked if your exhaust has any leaks? if the sound comes from under your hood maybe some part of the intake is loose? again hard to say without hearing.

Is the noise coming from the engine bay? If so, being a 91 its like busted exhaust studs. I had a Maxima that, when you got on the throttle, the exhaust leaking due to the broken studs actually made it sound like it had a turbocharger on it. No joke, a friend of mine that owned a performance shop actually thought it had a turbo on it when I drove off.

It is more than likely that you either have a bad exhaust gasket or you have broken one of the exhaust maifolds bolts off. On my old pathfinder, which has the same VG30E 3.0 SOHC, this happened and my instead of pulling the head we just replaced the exhaust gasket and used some silicon. But it was only a temporary fix.
