First, I couldn't move the shift lever out of park without pressing the red shift lock override button located on the front of the shift lever. I found out that the shift lock solenoid wasn't operating because the circuit board inside the shift lock control module burned out, so I bought a new control module and installed it. I can now shift out of park into drive or any other gear without having to use the override button. But now a new problem - I can't move the shift lever from any gear back into park - the shift lever now stops at reverse, and I have to use the override button to get past reverse and into park. The shift lock solenoid and detention switch both test good, and I'm at a loss. Any ideas as to what's causing the shift lever to stop at reverse instead of going into park? Maybe a mechanical problem with the shifter assembly? Thanks for your help.

Sometimes the shifter rod that connects to the release button becomes bent. Remove the cover around the shifter and operate the shifter to check the problem. Sometimes the rod can be straightened.
