You can spend weeks trying to do a shade tree diagnosis. In this time your engine may or may not survive.
A professional diagnosis will cost some $$, but in the long run it is worth saving time, aggravation and throwing $$ parts at the car.
I took my son's Mitsubishi to PEP boys today to figure out an off idle stumble that we've been chasing for a couple weeks now. They ID'd the problem, and fixed it before noon. Cost was $75 for the diag which went towards labor to fix it , and another $50 in parts.
Not that I would overall recommend PEP boys, but the guy at my local store is very good.
