So I'm in the market to buy a used car, and there's a guy selling a 1991 G20 for $1700 - way under blue book for the condition it's in (good). He seems to be desperate for money, hence the price.

I told him I'd be taking the car to a mechanic first, so I'm going to assume he's up front with me about the car's problems as, well, he has no reason to assume I wouldn't find out. He says that the water pump has started leaking, but it's not in critical condition yet (no noise means it hasn't started leaking onto the drive belt yet, right?)

I know generally speaking that you shouldn't buy a car you have to put extra money into right away, but even if I needed to replace the water pump right away the car would still only end up costing me around $2000, still under blue book price.

Good deal? Any insight would be helpful. Thanks.

If you do the water pump job yourself, that cost estimate is probably spot on. It shouldn't be tough for a good mechanic, so you might hit $2k anyway.

Water pumps are a pretty common fix on this motor, particularly with that age, so the price should match the commonality.

In other words, it sounds like a good buy if that's the only thing wrong with it.
