So my brother has a 91 D21 that we have already pulled the transmission out of once and because of funding issue he decided to bandaid the problem. A year later it is now stuck in 4th gear. Does anyone know where I can find out what type of transmission this is or the model number? It is a 91 D21, 4x4 with the 2.4L engine, MT. Thanks.

Is it the FS5W71C? Anyone know of a good place to look for one?

I'm pretty sure it is the FS5W71C since it is behind a KA24E. You could also call these guys http://www.manual-transmission.com/?q=node/4, or check every junkyard in your general area.

Or you could try overhauling it yourself. I am in the process of taking mine apart right now for what I suspect to be a bad countershaft or input bearing.

I had thought of that as well - any advice where to get the rebuild kit?

I have heard the input shaft bearing can go quite often due to the fact that you can't adequately fill the transmission up from the fill plug.
