I've heard it's a pain but that it can be donew much more quickkly that the dealer quote, and yeah if it's sending a false knock signal you'll be in "saftey boost"

it's a bit of a drive but you might want to check crawfords z car service in nashville, doug stewart is the owner and an active member of the nashville z car club I am shure he'd be fair but again thats in nashville, chattanooga has a rather large z car club as well I'd be suprised it they couldn't recomend someone local who could do it right for a lot less money

zcca.org (I'm too lazy to get you the link to the chattanooga club)

Thanks guys...I dont own the car yet but thinking of buying it...the 9 hrs wasnt from a dealer,it was quoted from a very, very, reputable local Import service/repair shop....checked a dealer(Hunt Nissan in Chattanooga) and they quoted 10.8 hours labor @ $80 per hr....AND they said the knock sensor had "absolutely nothing to do with the turbos..."...:>(

9hrs is "book time" meaning they quted you out of something like a mitchell flat rate manual. It doesnt sound like they have done one. The 10.8 you got qouted from the dealer sounds like an experianced quote. The knock sensor is located under the intake manifold near the back in the valley of the block. I have had many of the Z31's intakes apart for various reasons. That 10.8 is a pretty accurate quote.

The knock sensor is not directly connected to turbo operation but timing advance is. Knock sensor will effect timing therefore it will effect boost. If a knock sensor goes open circuit [your failure] It will go into a fail safe timing setting. Meaning it will not allow the timing to advance on accel as much as it would when the sensor is functioning properly. This will effectively cut back on your boost. But with the knock sensor out of comission you are also unprotected from pinging , with boost that is NOT a good thing.

Don't necessarily pass on a car just cause a sensor is bad. Use the fact that it needs a new one as leverage in the negotiations

Its a time consuming job, but I'm sure you can find a local Z'er who'd help you do it.

Forget replacing it. Relocate it or use the resitor trick to make the car think its fine. Hell the knock sensor might be goo and some dumbass just put something less then 91 octane in it. Which would do the same thing.
