How long do MAFs usually last? Should you buy new/refurbished or used MAFs?

what's wrong with your mafs?

symptoms include: black smoke out the exhaust and/ or bogging at idle.

if so, you might be able to save it with a mafs cleaner.

Thanks:)My idle is fine but it does dip down(nearly stalling) when I come to stops. My idle is rich , at least the voltage from O2 sensor suggests it is rich.

When I cleaned the maf sensor, the element had a crusty white substance on it. I assumed that was normal.

i didnt realize you could take the sensor out like that. I opened up the back and sprayed in the hole.

I know on my maxima i would come to a stop at stop signs, street lights, and even just slowing down for a turn and my car would just shut off. I had the MAF replaced and it runs great now.

Your car can run without the maf..just not through the whole rpm range. Unplug the maf and see how the car runs at idle...if the problem goes away its your maf. As for cleaning it, take a q-tip and cleaner be VERY gentle and wipe the element. When I say gentle I mean gentle.

My car runs good at idle. The problem is when I come to a stop. The idle is terrible if I disconnect the MAF. I guess I could try stopping with MAF disconnected.

Is the maf sensor supposed to be coated with a white substance? When I rub Qtip on white stuff it is very prickly. It is a very uneven surface. The cotton catches on the uneven parts of white substance on sensor.
