Hi,

I recently changed the clutch on my 1991 240sx(New pressure plate, clutch plate and throwout bearing, just a cheap autozone part), and have been having some problems with noise from the transmission.

Car goes into gear fine, and pedal pressure is fine, it drives just fine..however

when I engage the clutch i get a whirring noise (best i can describe it) (it's hard to tell if the noise is dependent on engine speed, but it seems to start past about 2k rpms) only during engagement.

if I stop in the middle of engaging and push the clutch back in, the noise stays until i let all the way off the clutch.

if i'm in neutral(or any gear), and i push the clutch in and rev the engine, same noise.

also, when i got my flywheel resurfaced, the guy told me that he couldn't get out some of the heatspots, and you can feel slightly raised sections on the flywheel.

so i'm wondering what part is causing this...

Edit: Also, i get a slight metal to metal noise above 4k rpms, i can only hear it in first/second gear, but that's probably because road noise drowns it out past that as i have no rear interior;)

Thanks,

Ben

I would guess your engaugement noise is the new throwout bearing either not installed right or bad out of the box.

On every nissan ive touched/seen anything less than a Nissan OEM T/O bearing or one that comes with a name brand high perf clutch will squeel or make noise. It will still work fine but i assure you the noise will only get worse. If you dont mind taking the transmission off again you can try cramming the bearing with grease, which might help. Otherwise order a nissan replacement, though its 30 bucks :oface

heres one place you can get it from http://www.courtesyparts.com/S13_clutch.html

Yeah it looks like it was the throwout bearing. I'd heard you could fix it by putting grease in through the dustboot that protects the clutch fork, so i did that.

and it did fix the problem a little, although it's not entirely gone. i did however succeed in getting grease on the flywheel or clutch plate or something as my clutch now slips;) so i have to drop the transmission anyway.hehe

ah well, practice makes perfect:)

anyway, i have a few other questions on problems my car is having that may be transmission related.

the metal to metal noise i get at about 4k rpms, it seems to only appear right around there, no where else.maybe it's a chain thing? happens in neutral/any gear.

and after i drive my car fast for a while, on the highway or whatever, when i stop i get a strong burnt odor from the car, it's not noticably inside but definitely noticable outside.

hrm....think that about covers the things i'm curious about, and how important is it to replace the pilot bushing? i didn't get one with my original clutch kit, but since i'm dropping the transmission again, and i'm having problems. i think it might be worthwhile to pick one up, and maybe an OEM TO bearing while i'm at it.. ?

anyway..

thanks a lot for your help,

Ben

One of your heat shields is rattling, theres ones on the exhaust from the cat all the way to the engine, i had to remove all of mine to get rid of every noise (mine used to occur around 3.5-4k rpms). It sounds almost like a metal reciprocating saw on metal sound right? You can either remove the heat shields or live with it. Only downside is when the exhaust manifold heatshield is removed your engine bay temps will go up alittle, but it wont be bad, your choice. You cant remove them and try to tighten them back down, the bolts are all very rusty, most of them will break when you mess with em.

That would be your brake pads, thats normal when you do a hefty stop from high speeds.

I replaced mine at 96k, but it isnt completely necessary, just put the clutch alignment tool into it and see how much play there is, if it can move around a bit side to side you should change it. Use your own judgement here. Make sure you get a nissan replacement though, i got one from a local auto shop and i couldnt even get the transmission in so i had to pull it back out and sand it :rolleyes

anyway..

This is more directed at Nistech..

I was reading some other threads and you mentioned that after changing the transmission fluid in a transmission that hadn't had it done in a long time, you sometimes get a howling noise from the transmission..

I was wondering if this might not be my noise, because it's starting to behave kind of oddly for a TO bearing problem.. It no longer happens when I rev in neutral(clutch in), It doesn't happen in first anymore, however sometimes when i shift from first to second, it'll start, and then die off (like during the actual shift, not during the clutch engagement)

anyway, the symptoms the other guy had were some grinding when shifting and some metal spikes on the transmission drain plug (which I also had, although not quite as severe as his)... and the fluid and clutch were changed at the same time..

hm..I still haven't dropped it again because i'm a moron and somewhere in my messing with my pedal adjustment i had it set so it wasn't disengaging the clutch all the way... which was causing the slipping..and the odor (clutch burning)

and since the noise appears to be fixing itself... i figure it'll make it;)

anyway, was just curious what you mean by the howling noise:)

Thanks,

Ben

the howling noise would be very constant any time you are idleing with your foot off the clutch and anytime you are driving in any gear but forth that is usually the main bearings in the trans if it comes and goes it may be your countershaft bearing in the trans. hope that explains it somewhat.
