I have a 1991 240SX hatchback. Whenever I first mash the clutch petal, I get a strange high pitched whirling sound. Not just when I first mash the clutch, but alot of times - every time. The seller had to replace the clutch before I purchased it. I don't remember this noise when I purchased it. I do remember him having to adjust the clutch several times. I'd get on the street and the clutch was so much out of adjustment (loose), the car would hardly push from the back wheels. The clutch was not engaging fully. The car has no problem with the clutch not engaging now - just the noise. Any ideas?

pilot bushing probably worn out. THe bushing is pressed into the end of the crank shaft.

I'm hearing the same noise. We took it back to the shop that did the work and they didn't hear the noise. We're taking it to a better shop an the first shop will pay!

The throwout bearing is most likely worn; the only time the throwout bearing spins is when the clutch pedal is depressed.

I'm leaning towards pilot bearing. Usually the shop is too lazy to remove the pilot bearing when doing a clutch job. I did a clutch job myself and changed everything except the pilot bearing and its making that whirling noise every now and then.
