I just completed my auto to 5 speed swap and noticed a problem. First off, I've replaced the slave cylinder, master clutch cylinder, throw out bearing, pilot bushing, clutch, flywheel, and pressure plate, and I have filled the transmission with Redline MT90 fluid. I have also removed the damper box. So I have replaced basically every part. My problem is that in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear the transmission whines (almost like how some cars sound when they are in reverse, that remote control car type of sound). The car shifts great though and the syncros are in great working order. My dad told me its probably the bearings inside the transmission going out. I just wanted to know what everyone else thinks it could be and if theres a solution.

Thanks, David

your dad may be right but before removing the trans, check the trans mount and make sure it's the right one and that it is in good condition. if the mount is bad or the trans is contacting the chassis anywhere, it's going to be really noise even if the trans is in perfect condition. even if the shifter is leaning on something, it can cause noises like that.one car i was dealing with had this problem. the guy had a bunch of change in the shifter boot area and was causing a noise because the sheer number of coins in that area was causing the sound vibrations in the shifter to transmit through to the center console. cleared out the butt load of coins and the problem was fixed.also aftermarket drive shafts can cause noise too. i installed a single piece aluminum drive shaft and it was pretty noisey at crusing speeds.

may also be gear lash.

gear lash or bearing play will cause junk to build up in oil and on magnet. check fluid after a few thousand miles. dont worry about the transmission. replacements are much cheaper than overhaul anyway.
